Error Budget

An error budget is the allowable amount of unreliability in a service derived from its SLO — if a service targets 99.9% availability, the error budget is 0.1% (about 8.7 hours per year). When the error budget is consumed, feature development slows and reliability work is prioritized.

Error budgets create a shared incentive between product and engineering teams to balance velocity with stability.
