Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides traffic management, mutual TLS, observability, and policy enforcement for Kubernetes microservices without application code changes. It uses Envoy sidecar proxies injected into each pod to intercept all inbound and outbound traffic.
Istio's control plane (Istiod) distributes configuration, certificates, and telemetry aggregation across the mesh.
